Detoxification & Rejuvenation Treatments "Panchakarma" Ayurveda, as an ancient science of wholistic medicine, emphasizes preventative and healing therapies along with various methods of purification and rejuvenation. Toward this end ayurveda prescribes panchakarma therapy for the cleansing of body toxins. Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word that means "five actions" or "five treatments”. Its purpose is to remove toxins out of the body by means of the waste evacuation channels such as sweat glands, urinary tract, and intestines. It involves daily oily massages that are extremely pleasurable. Panchakarma is a highly personalised therapy based on the needs of the individual depending on the body type and constitutional imbalances. Usually only parts of the five therapies are needed. Panchakarma is a seasonal treatment which can be administered over several consecutive days and creates a profound and deeply purifying state.dosha (work out your dosha now) The pancharkarma process Step one - preparation Panchakarma begins with oleation. The application of oil to the body to loosen up and mobilise accumulated toxins (ama) and internal oleation where it is sometimes necessary depending on your dosha type to consume oils and ghee in your diet. External oleation includes a relaxing and nourishing daily abhyanga & marma point massage. A simple nutritious vegetarian diet according to your particular dosha is enjoyed as part of the treatment process. Swedana or steam treatment. Specific steam amd warm oil therapies are used to heat the body. These treatments helps to open up the bodys circulation channels and allows toxins to freely move from the tissues to the gasto- intestinal tract ready for elimination. Step two - elimination Once the toxins have been mobilised they are ready to be released from the body. Elimination therapies include daily "basti" a herbal enema that is used to flush out toxins or gentle purgation may be in order. The elimination treatments may also include "nasyam" where a few drops of medicated oil are placed in the nostril. Nasyam is reputed to cleanse & heal the upper respiratory tract. Step three - rejuventation The final step is rasayana " that which is nourishing". Once the toxins have been released it is crucial to replenish the body with natural foods & herbs. This step also includes healing abhyanga massage treatments & shirodhara as well as relaxation, meditation and yoga practices. India ayurvedic doctors recommend at least yearly if not seasonal panchakarma treatments to detoxify & rejuventate our entire being. Ideally panchakarma treatments are administered over a period of several consecutive days (5 to 14 days) to create a truly profound healing experience.
